The appointment of the new committee is always an exciting time, the outgoing committee will try its best to ensure that the people who are taking over their portfolio are willing and able to assume their new role.
For the benefit of those who were not present for the briefing, I'll mention the selection process. There will be 3 stages of selection. Committee positions are open to sec 2, 3 and 4 students. Sec ones may be appointed in some positions, as such, sec ones are NOT required to complete the written submission. However, you are most welcomed to do so if you wish to.
The first stage is a written submission of not more than 500 words about why you want or do not want to be in the committee. You should elaborate on your skills and also areas that you are not interested in. So you might not know what you want to do, but knowing what you do NOT want to do helps in the decision making process. DATELINE: Friday, 6pm. You can submit it via email: guitarchoo@hotmail.com I will read it and some student leaders will be allowed to read your submissions.
When the first stage is completed. We will have a voting session. All students should take the voting very seriously. During the voting, all ensemble members will be asked to write up to 10 names for students who are capable of taking committee positions and 8 names for music leaders (section leaders, etc..) You do not need to write all 10 names for the sake of it, if you want to write only 5 names, you can leave it at 5 names. Voting is confidential so nobody should reveal names on the voting slips. Results of this vote will show the ensemble’s confidence in a particular individual.
The last stage is the interview stage. This is the most difficult stage. The committee, the teacher in charge (Mdm Chen) and myself will ask candidates questions to help us find out more and to clarify any doubts. You need to be able to articulate yourself well. If you are not able to communicate yourself well, practice it among your friends. A candidate will not be appointed if she does not speak. At times, a second interview may be necessary.
All new committee members will be on a 3-month probation period. Within the 3 months, new committee members must be able to demonstrate capability to lead, have initiative and build a good working relationship with other committee members. The entire process should be completed by the first week of April.
